As Adrian and I stepped into the house, a wave of determination washed over me. The Halloween decorations we had just bought felt like more than just seasonal adornments; they were a welcome distraction from everything that had happened. My mind craved the normalcy and creativity of decorating. It was a task that would allow me to channel my energy into something positive and tangible, a much-needed reprieve from the chaos of my thoughts and feelings.

I began unpacking the decorations with an enthusiasm that surprised even myself. The act of transforming the house into a Halloween haven was oddly therapeutic. I draped spider webs across the windows, their gossamer strands catching the light in eerie ways. The life-sized skeleton found its place by the entrance, a spooky greeter for anyone who would visit. Each item I placed around the house added to a growing sense of accomplishment and normalcy. For those moments, I was simply a girl excited about Halloween.

Adrian watched me work, occasionally lending a hand where needed. His presence was both comforting and disconcerting. There were moments when our eyes met, and a jolt of electricity seemed to pass between us. Yet, there was also a sense of camaraderie, a shared experience in creating something fun and festive. It was a strange juxtaposition, being so close to him physically while my heart and mind were still trying to navigate the complexities of our relationship.

The house began to take shape, adorned with all things Halloween, and I felt a weight lift from my shoulders, if only temporarily. The decorations were a reminder that life could still be simple and joyful, even when personal circumstances were anything but. The task of decorating provided me with the space to breathe, to not think about what I wanted right now. It was a respite, a chance to regroup before facing the inevitable decisions that lay ahead.

“I have to go,” he said. “There’s a late practice tonight. Did you need anything before I left?"

Part of me wanted to ask him to stay, to not leave me alone with the chaos of my thoughts. But I knew he was needed at practice, and I couldn't ask that of him.

"No, I'm fine," I replied, trying to sound more assured than I felt. However, just as he was about to step out, I called out to him. "Adrian, thank you for what you did for me today. It meant a lot."

He hesitated at the door, turning back to look at me. "Promise me you'll still be here when I get back," he said.

I looked away, unable to meet his gaze. I had been planning to pack up my things, to escape the overwhelming emotions and complications. But where would I go? The truth was, I had nowhere else to go. I wasn't ready to walk away just yet.

Adrian took a step closer, his eyes locking onto mine. "I won't go to practice if you're going to leave," he stated firmly. I knew he was serious, that he would sacrifice his practice for me.
